Where did Dr Tsung train?

Dr Tsung completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney and trained as a specialist orthopaedic surgeon through the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He undertook subspecialty fellowship training in hip and knee surgery at the Peninsula Orthopaedics Research Institute in Sydney, and in primary and revision hip surgery at the Exeter Hip Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in the United Kingdom, where the Exeter hip replacement was developed. He has practised on the Gold Coast for over a decade and now works exclusively in private practice. In that time he has performed over 1,000 hip and knee replacements.

What does Dr Tsung specialise in?

Dr Tsung's practice is focused on the hip and knee:

  • Hip replacement using the direct superior approach, a muscle-sparing technique that has been his primary approach since 2015, for both first-time and selected revision surgery. More on hip replacement and robotic hip replacement.
  • Knee replacement, total and partial, using functional alignment and, for suitable patients, an anterolateral skin incision that reduces the numbness common after knee surgery. More on knee replacement and robotic knee replacement.
  • Robotic-assisted planning with the Mako system, which he has used since 2016. More on robotic-assisted joint replacement.
  • Revision joint replacement, repairing or replacing hip and knee replacements that have worn, loosened or become infected, including complex reconstruction. More on revision joint replacement.
  • Sports knee injuries and non-surgical arthritis care, including knee ligament reconstruction and arthroscopy, and managing hip and knee osteoarthritis before surgery is considered. More on sports knee injuries and arthritis management.

He matches the technique to the individual joint and patient. Surgery is considered only when non-surgical care no longer gives enough relief, and the decision to operate is always made with you.

Medico-legal and injury assessment

Dr Tsung also undertakes medico-legal work. He provides independent medical examinations (IME) as a lower-limb specialist and musculoskeletal injury assessments, including for the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA). Enquiries for medico-legal assessments can be directed to hello@sgco.au.

Teaching, research and memberships

Dr Tsung is involved in surgical education and clinical research, and has worked as teaching faculty training other surgeons in robotic-assisted joint replacement and hip surgery techniques. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Arthroplasty, the ANZ Journal of Surgery, and the Australian Journal of Primary Health. In 2019 he was awarded the Health Minister's Clinical Innovation Award for leading a value-based care program for hip and knee arthritis in the Northern New South Wales Local Health District, a model since adopted more widely across NSW Health. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and a member of the Arthroplasty Society of Asia. Beyond his surgical practice, he is a co-founder of Beyond the Clinic, a health technology company.

Where does Dr Tsung see patients?

Southern Gold Coast Orthopaedics is based at John Flynn Specialist Suites in Tugun, on the southern Gold Coast near the Queensland and New South Wales border. The rooms are close to John Flynn Private Hospital and are used for consultation, assessment, imaging review, surgical planning and follow-up appointments. Dr Tsung cares for patients from the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and the Northern Rivers, as well as patients referred from other parts of Queensland and New South Wales.

Most appointments start with a referral, a clinical history, examination and review of available imaging. If you already have X-rays, CT, MRI or reports, bring them with you or ask the imaging provider to make them available to the rooms before your appointment. It is also useful to bring a medication list, allergy list and details of any previous hip or knee surgery. If surgery becomes part of the discussion, the rooms provide written information about fees, hospital cover, consent, preparation and follow-up before an operation is booked.
